In a conventional x-ray, structures are superimposed on top of one another, making it difficult to get a clear picture. CT scan takes a picture of the body in a single cross-section, giving an unobstructed view of every organ, bone and soft-tissue. CT uses pencil-point x-ray beams from a rotating doughnut surrounding the patient's body. Detectors pick up the signals which vary in strength after they pass through human tissue. The detectors then send this information to a computer, which creates a picture of a single slice of the human body.
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It takes cross-sectional images in any plane of the body. These images are detailed and clearly demonstrate almost any part of the body: brain, nerves, muscles, spinal cord, intervertebral discs, cartilage, ligaments, etc. The MRI scanner produces these images by placing the patient within a magnetic field and then aiming a pulse of radiowaves into the body. The radiowaves are returned from the body and this signal is the basis for producing an image. This process is completely safe and does not involve any0020 harmful radiation.
A color doppler test uses reflected sound waves to see how blood flows through a blood vessel. It helps to evaluate blood flow through major arteries and veins, such as those of the arms, legs, and neck. It can show blocked or reduced blood flow through narrowing in the major arteries of the neck that could cause a stroke. It also can reveal blood clots in leg veins (DVT; deep vein thrombosis) that could break loose and block blood flow to the lungs (pulmonary embolism). During pregnancy, Doppler ultrasound may be used to look at blood flow in an unborn baby (fetus) to check the health of the fetus.
X Rays are widely used to make radiographs of the bones and internal organs of the body. They help doctors detect abnormalities and disease conditions such as broken bones, stones, calcium depositions inside a patient's body. X-rays are a form of radiant energy, like light or radio waves, but unlike light, x-rays can penetrate the body, which produces pictures of internal structures. The radiologist can view these on photographic films or computer monitor. At Chirag Hospital many disease entities in which the classic diagnosis is obtained by plain radiographs. Examples include various types of arthritis and pneumonia, bone tumors (especially benign bone tumors), fractures, congenital skeletal anomalies, etc.
The hospital has Air Conditioned Intensive Care Unit fully equipped with state of art Multi Parameter Monitors, Cardiac Defibrillator & Ventilators. The ICU & NICU is well equipped to handle all critical cases in all specialities.
Ultrasound is a method of obtaining images from inside the human body through the use of high frequency sound waves. The reflected sound wave echoes are recorded and displayed as a real-time visual image. No radiation is involved in ultrasound imaging. Obstetric ultrasound refers to the specialized use of sound waves to visualize and determine the condition of a pregnant woman and the fetus.
Fluoroscopy is a specific imaging technique commonly used by physicians to obtain real-time moving images of the internal structures of a patient through the use of a fluoroscope. At Chirag Hospital we have the latest Digital Fluoro by Siemens - AXIOM R200 which uses X-ray image intensifier and CCD video camera allowing the images to be recorded and played on a monitor. In fluoroscopy patient is exposed to very low dose of radiation which is further reduced with the use of image intensifier.
TMT stands for Tread Mill T est. It is a screening tool to test the effect of exercise on the heart. In this test patient is made to walk on a treadmill and electrical activity of the heart is measured with an ECG, and blood pressure recordings are taken every few minutes. As per a standard protocol patient is made to walk till target heart rate is reached, but if the patient develops chest discomfort or ECG changes the test is terminated.
Echocardiography is a diagnostic test that uses ultrasound waves to image the size and shape of heart, to assess the movement of cardiac valves & chambers and to determine the blood flow through the heart. It provides a wealth of information like; pumping strength of the heart (EF: Ejection Fraction),extent of damage to the heart wall reflecting the severity of coronary artery disease, pattern of blood flow across the cardiac valves showing the extent of stenosis or regugitation, increase or decrease in the size of the heart wall in cases of cardiomyopathy.
OPG stands for Orthopantomogram. It is a panoramic scanning dental X-ray of the upper and lower jaw. It shows a two-dimensional view of a half-circle from ear to ear. The most common use is to determine the status of wisdom teeth and trauma to the jaws.
Mammography is the process of using low-energy-X-rays (usually around 30 kVp) to examine the human breast and is used as a diagnostic and a screening tool. The goeal of mammography is the early detetion of breast cancer, typically through detection of characteristic masses and / or microcalcifications. Like all x-rays, mammograms use doses of ionizing radiation to create images. Radiologists then analyze the image for any abnormal findings. It is normal to use lower energy X-rays (typically Mo-K) than those used for radiography of bones.
Denta scan is the latest dental technology which makes use of advanced computer analysis to construct the true cross-sectional pictures (3D image) of the mandible (jaw) and maxilla (upper mouth). This technique is particularly useful in assessing the position of impacted teeth or planning dental implants as it provides with very accurate and precise measurements. It is also helpful during dental implant surgery.
DEXA stands for Dual-Emission X-ray Absorptiometry. It measures how much calcium and other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone. T wo X-ray beams with differing energy levels are aimed at the patient's bones. Bone Marrow Density(BMD) is calculated from the absorption of each beam by the bone. DEXA can determine if you have osteoporosis or are at risk of osteoporosis and thus helps in assessing the risk of fracture.
ECG stands for Electrocardiogram. It records the electrical activity of the heart. Shows the part of the heart that may be damaged, an irregular heart beat or rhythm and a decrease in supply of blood or oxygen to the heart. It can determine whether a heart attack has occurred or not.
EEG measures the activity of brain. In this test electrodes are applied over the patients head and voltage differences in various parts of the brain are recorded. These voltage differences represent activity in that region of the brain. The test is completed in 30-40 minutes. The machine has an attached video camera which helps in visualizing the abnormal movements of the patient during the recording. EEG is most useful in patients of epilepsy; especially in diagnosing the type of epilepsy, in localizing the focus of seizures, in prognosticating the patient, in helping the physician in choosing the appropriate drug for the patient. EEG is a very important parameter in diagnosing brain death. It is also helpful in patients of encephalopathy, encephalitis, brain tumors etc.
Electromyography is used to examine and measure the muscle activity. This test is performed by a neurologist. A thin needle is inserted into the weak muscle and the muscle activity is assessed. The type as well as the origin of muscle weakness is identified which may be the muscle itself or the nerve tracts which activate the muscle. This information is very helpful in accurate diagnosis and management of the patient. This test is very helpful in patients with any type of muscle disorder, motor neuron disease and various nerve lesions.
Nerve Conduction Studies test measures the integrity of nerve tracts which conduct the electric impulses. It is used to assess the nature, severity and duration of the nerve lesion and in combination with EMG helps in predicting the chances of recovery after a nerve lesion.
